“The young and the crème layer of Ahmedabad are madly involved in the addiction of brown sugar and are spending thousands of rupees to access the banned drug,” are the words of a Deputy Superintendent of Police who has spent a lot of time investigating drug peddling cases. He, however, spoke on condition of anonymity.

The cop told DNA that youngsters on the party circuit in the city are spending lakhs of rupees on illegal drugs. However, these drugs used are largely consumed behind closed doors and at party circuits of the city. “Even influential people indulge in this habit,” he said.

The network of drug peddlers is wide in the city. Another cop said that the network ranges from Uttar Pradesh to Madhya Pradesh to the city. “Most of the time, Ahmedabad is also used as a transit point to smuggle drugs to cities like Mumbai,” a police source said.

The source also said that the Mansoor district of MP and Aeta of UP are the hubs where small consignments of drugs are gathered. “The headquarters of the drugs mafia is actually Delhi and from there it is distributed across the country,” the cop said. The drug is sold in small polythene bags across the city.

The cop further said that, in most of the investigations, all the banned drugs are smuggled and sold in retail in areas like Shahpur, Gomtipur and Juhapura. “Brown sugar is very costly as compared to other drugs and so people with high spending capacity place such orders,” he said.
