The support extended by 35 IPS officers to Sanjiv Bhatt and his family was a gesture of goodwill and should not be seen as a move against the state government, said Gujarat in-charge DGP, Chitranjan Sigh, on Sunday.

"If some officer has done something wrong, the courts will look into it. If his family needs something, it is our duty to support the family," Singh said while addressing a press conference on Sunday.

He also said that the resolution passed at the IPS officers' association meeting on Saturday demanding appointment of a permanent DGP in the state, was not against him.

"It was just a demand by the IPS officers. It was not against me or the state government," he clarified.

Whistleblower IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who is lodged in Sabarmati jail, gained the support of his colleagues through the IPS officers association of the state. As many as 35 IPS officers gathered for the meeting held at the IPS mess in Sahibaugh on Saturday, and passed a circular declaring their support to Bhatt. The association has also resolved to support Bhatt's family. Many are calling it the first such act of defiance by IPS officers in Narendra Modi's 10-year-long regime.

After the meeting on Saturday, three IPS officers - Atul Karwal, Pravin Sinha and VM Parghi - who are also the batch-mates of

Bhatt, went to his house to tell his wife that they are with her.
Singh, however, claimed that the IPS officers had gathered in the city for a marriage function. "They had come to Ahmedabad to attend the marriage of an IPS officer's daughter on Friday. So it was just a casual visit to Bhatt's house that was just a goodwill gesture," said Singh.
