A senior IPS officer is among several high profile ‘beneficiaries’ who received plots under the controversial Megh Malhar Housing Cooperative Society.
The contentious society is under police scanner for last couple of months. Forty-seven plots were presumably sold to 75 clients. However, only a few people have received possession till now. The society is located in Ognaj under Sarkhej police station.
A former minister, owner of a renowned hospital and his relative, a hotelier and a couple of other high profile people managed to acquire their plots. According to police, apart from these few recipients, around 25 plots were allocated to Desai family.
Society developers are facing criminal offences for ‘selling’ each plot to more than one buyer. According to three FIRs lodged with Sarkhej police, complainants stated that when they tried to get possession of their plots, they found out that there were at least two other people who had purchased the plots.
According to a top official who has monitored the case from the beginning, organisers Hasmukh Patel, his son Nitul Patel and cousin Dipesh J Patel collected money from dozens of people. In lieu of money, they gave buyers share certificates and finalised agreements. Later it was revealed that the same agreement was sold to many others. The scheme was floated in 2002.
Nisar S Malik, police inspector who is investigating the case said that there are some clues that police have unearthed in the investigation. According to him, few more arrests will be made in this connection. Nitul Patel has been arrested while the other two accused are absconding.
