More than 30 industrial associations will organise a protest procession and observe one-day fast here on Dec 20, to convey to the government their support to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP).

The protest is in response to the decision taken last week by certain industry associations in Tamil Nadu to shut down their units and go on a day-long fast in front of important government offices in support of the KNPP, M Kandhasamy, President, Coimbatore District Small Industries Association, said here today.

Stating that the representatives of various industrial associations had met the top authorities in Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) and Department of Power in Chennai a couple of days ago, he said there was no positive response from them with regard to ending the power crisis in the near future.

Supporting Khandasamy's views, S Ravikumar, President, Kovai and Tirupur Tiny and Micro industries Association, said the KNPP was the "only ray of hope" for the power-starved state of Tamil Nadu, as both the industrialists, in particular the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and the common man were at the "end of their tether" due to severe power shortage and erratic power cuts.

Mahendra Ramdass, President, Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association, claimed there was a production loss of Rs 150 crore to Rs 200 crore per day due to the power shortage and also unscheduled power cuts in the district. Workers were paid wages for sitting idle in most of the industries, he said.

It was now the responsibility of the Government to convince the local residents about the credibility of the project and put to rest their safety related fears, he said.
