An inebriated Indian-origin driver, who forgot he was driving a double-decker bus and had the top deck of his bus sliced off after driving through a low height bridge, is due to be sentenced to jail.

Gurdeep Singh Sagoo, 49, was almost three times the drink-drive limit when he drove the bus to drop off children to school on May 12. He drove through the low bridge after dropping them off, and no one was hurt in the mishap.

Sagoo was reportedly on an all-night binge with his friends before the incident in Buckinghamshire.

His bus was 15 feet tall but Sagoo ignored signs warning the upcoming bridge was less than 13 feet in height. As he drove through the bridge, the top deck sliced off, sending shards of metal and glass flying off.

After he was arrested, Sagoo told police he had forgotten he was driving a two-tier bus and thought it was a single decker. The incident happened on May 12 and Sagoo is now facing the prospect of a term in jail.

Sagoo, who had been working as a bus driver for five years, admitted dangerous driving and drink-driving at the east Berkshire magistrates' court.

He has been banned from driving until sentencing at the Reading Crown Court, and released on unconditional bail, reports said.

In court, he was described as a 'well regarded' employee and his solicitor claimed he had made a 'serious error of judgment'.

Magistrate Judy Tomlin said, "You had been drinking, you had been driving children and at 4pm you had a high alcohol reading. You would have been much higher earlier on in the day."
