With India voting for a US-sponsored resolution at the UNHRC censuring Sri Lanka for alleged rights violations, CPI on Thursday asked the government to "persuade and pressurise" the island nation to take "credible action" to probe these violations.

"This gives India a fresh opportunity to persuade and pressurise Sri Lankan authorities to go for credible action in investigating the war crimes and create conditions for a political solution to the Tamil problem," party National Secretary D Raja said here.

Instead of supporting the US-sponsored resolution, India should have moved a resolution on its own, he said.

Raja said the resolution was "a warning" for Sri Lankan government and it should understand the concerns of the international community.

"Colombo is under international scrutiny. The global community is watching what Sri Lankan government is going to do in the coming days," he said.
