Gujarat government’s tourism department is organising a first ever Global Bird Watchers’ conference 2010 at Khijadiya Bird sanctuary, Jamnagar, to be held from November 25-27. With increasing ecological awareness among today’s youth, there is a surge in interest in understanding nature and its resources. The conference aims at promoting eco-tourism.

The event is being co-partnered by Federation of Indian Chambers for Commerce and Industry (FICCI). On top of the agenda is Khijadiya’s natural beauty for tourism promotion, ornithologists and other stake holders. The conference is expected to attract 500 ornithologists, travel writers and photographers from 45 countries.

Six sessions which include field trips for the guests, will give people an opportunity to spot 450 different kinds of birds at the wetlands of Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is an ideal location, a unique wetland with seawater on one side and fresh water on the other. The unique destination links to history as the reclamation bunds, due to which two separate lakes were formed, during the British era to prevent saline ingression. These lakes provide fresh water ecosystem for the birds during winter, hence, they flock in large numbers to this sanctuary.

Delegates apart, many avian guests like Dalmatican pelican, brown-headed gull, comb duck, coppersmith barbet, kingfisher, black- tailed godwit, great crested grebe, and lot of more birds will throng the sanctuary. With variety of habitats — coastal lands, wetlands and islands, saline desert plains, forests, hills, lakes and grasslands, the state has become the most preferred destination of migratory birds from Europe and west Asia. The sanctuary is partly man-made and partly natural.

The conference is a step to make people realise that there are important bird sanctuaries other than Nalsarovar.
