The fledgling Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh already seems to be struggling to keep the promises the Samajwadi Party (SP) made in its poll manifesto. While concerns are already being raised over the prevailing law and order situation in the state, with a string of violent incidents refusing to abate ever since the new government took over, the latest disappointment has come in the area of unemployment allowance guarantee.
Over 3,000 forms submitted by educated jobless youth at Amroha district employment office were on Saturday found in a garbage dump. The SP in its poll manifesto had promised an allowance of Rs 1,000 per month to educated unemployed over the age of 35. The proposal was ratified in cabinet’s first meeting.
SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhry said the matter would be taken up with the minister concerned. “This will not be tolerated at any cost,” he said when reporters asked him about the Amroha incident. He said the matter would be investigated and officials responsible for the lapse would be punished.
Significantly, the SP’s promise of unemployment allowance was a major factor for youngsters voting for the party in a big way. Party leaders have acknowledged this fact publicly.
However, the registration of the jobless youth for the unemployment allowance itself has been a pathetic story.
Thousands of youngsters, girls and boys, have been crowding the district employment exchanges throughout the state after the SP came to power. At several places, the youngsters have had to suffer police caning and water canons in their attempt to register themselves at the employment offices.
