Illegal water units, selling packaged drinking water in city are under SMC scanner, as the civic health department has decided to seal all units that lack BIS certificates. Health officials will be conducting survey at all seven zones and sealing the units, which fail to comply with the rules.


The civic body has planned such a drive to prevent the sale of unhygienic drinking water- especially water pouches and water cans. The survey will begin from Tuesday. Officials of civic health department will check the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certificates of the units manufacturing packaged drinking water. If they don’t possess the certificate, officials will seal the units. At present, SMC has identified 32 illegal units selling packaged water in the city. However the officials have also decided to conduct survey in each zone to trace out undetected illegal units.
