It will be judgement day on Wednesday for Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa as Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde officially submits his final report on illegal mining.

The report submission is expected to seal Yeddyurappa’s fate as he has been indicted by the report. But an “honourable” exit plan is being worked out for Yeddyurappa if the report damningly indicts him. The leaked report holds him responsible for a loss of Rs1,827 crore to the state due to illegal mining in the last 14 months, and hints at him receiving kickbacks through huge donations from miners for Prerana Trust floated by Yeddyurappa’s sons and son-in-law. Justice Hegde himself has asserted that Yeddyurappa’s criminality has been established beyond doubt.

Yeddyurappa, however, is not about to surrender. He struck a defiant posture on Monday and Tuesday. “Why should I quit? It is prime minister Manmohan Singh and Union home minister P Chidambaram who have to quit in the face of their involvement in the 2G spectrum scam,” he reacted on Tuesday to media queries on Opposition pressing for his resignation.

“I will comment on the issue only after looking at Lokayukta’s final report on Wednesday. We will discuss the contents of the report and a course of action to be taken later on Wednesday,” he said.

Yeddyurappa said he had convened a BJP legislature party meeting on August 5 to scout ways and means to speed up development works in the state. He would also launch his whirlwind Karnataka tour from August first week to spread awareness among the people against Opposition’s “unrelenting misinformation campaign” to malign him.

A beleaguered Yeddyurappa left for Tirupati later on Tuesday to seek blessings of Lord Balaji. BJP sources, however, said Yeddyurappa’s defiance will be a futile if Lokayukta’s report strongly indicts Yeddyurappa.
