The moderate Hurriyat Conference appears to be heading for a spilt after influential Shia cleric Aga Syed Hassan raised a banner of revolt against Mirwaiz Umar Farooq for not objecting strongly enough to Dukhtaran-e-Millat leader Aasiya Andrabi’s alleged “character assassination” of the doves.

Aasiya had asked Mirwaiz to expel four senior executive members, including Hassan, former chairmen Abdul Gani Bhat and Maulvi Abbas Ansari and People’s Conference leader Bilal Gani Lone, for their “anti-movement” stand after Ansari blamed the mainstream People’s Democratic Party for the stone pelting in the Valley.

Angered by Mirwaiz’s stand, Hassan’s Anujmane Sharie Shian (ASS), a constituent of the Hurriyat Conference executive council, the top decision-making body of the separatist conglomerate, decided to boycott Hurriyat meetings and has kept the option of snapping ties open.

“The way Aasiya resorted to character assassination of Hassan has hurt sentiments of Shias. The response of Mirwaiz to Aasiya’s diatribe was insufficient and it seems he is supportive of her remarks,” a spokesman said after an ASS central committee meeting to discuss the latest political situation.

The central committee also authorised Hassan to weigh the option of parting ways with Hurriyat and represent Shias without joining an alliance.

“We shall not allow eclipsing of the sacrifices made by Aga Hassan’s family in the ‘freedom struggle’ since 1931. If our participation in Hurriyat is unwelcome, we shall bid goodbye to forum politics and play our role as an independent party,” the spokesman said. ASS also decided not to attend Hurriyat meetings.

If it happens, it will be Hurriyat’s second spilt. In 2003, the conglomerate had broken into two over alleged proxy candidates fielded by People’s Conference in elections.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani-led hardliners parted ways with the moderates, claiming to be the real Hurriyat. Hassan was initially with Geelani, but later joined the moderates.
