Like every year, this year too on Earth Hour Day, celebrated on March 26, several offices, NGOs, educational institutes and a few houses in the city will switch off lights for an hour, from 8.30 to 9.30pm. This is done as a way of bringing awareness about rapid climate changes and environmental issues.

For instance, students of Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA), will switch off lights in their hostel for an hour.

Karan Chadha from MICA's Team Interface said, "Our juniors are having their exams. However, for that one hour, all of us will gather at our library to study. It will be the only room in the institute with lights on."

Chadha added that MICA as a long-term plan is intending to make use of naturally generated power.

Similarly, a city-based NGO -- Dreams -- will become an active participant in Earth Hour 2011. "We are holding a programme at Vastrapur Lake on Saturday to celebrate Earth Hour. The programme will include formation of a human chain holding candles and switching off lights at 8.30pm for an hour. We have invited students of various colleges to take part," said Mayank Bapna, director of Dreams. He added that the activity is open to all.

Besides MICA, CEPT students will also be switching off lights for an hour on Saturday. At Gujarat Vidyapith, the importance of Earth Hour will be discussed during their morning prayer meeting, which will be followed by switching off of lights in the night for an hour.

Another NGO -- Paryavaran Mitra -- will initiate a lecture series for 2011 from Saturday. Mahesh Pandya, founder of the NGO said, "From Saturday, we are organising a lecture series on the importance of celebrating environment days. We have called Paresh Dave, programme manager for communication, DSC; Praveen Prakash, programme co-ordinator for Industries Group, CEE and Jaya Hemnani, teaching and research associate, GNLU, to talk about the importance of Earth Hour."

Delhi Public School in Bopal is sending text messages to parents urging them to observe Earth Hour by switching off electrical appliances on Saturday.
