Even as some political parties gave a call for a bandh in some city area on Thursday, the authorities were worried that the toll could rise further.

More than 45 people are still under treatment in different hospitals of the city. Meanwhile, a shaken state government suspended four police inspectors and two assistant commissioners of police, besides setting up a commission of enquiry headed by a retired high court judge, Justice Kamal M Mehta, to probe the tragedy.

Even as the Congress created a ruckus in the assembly and staged a walkout, the death toll rose sharply on Wednesday when 12 bodies were found lying in the streets of Odhav. All the 12 had died on Tuesday night after consuming spurious liquor.

The actual magnitude of the tragedy became clear when deaths were reported from areas other than Majoorgaam. Kagdapith, Odhav, Seherkotda, Bapunagar and Amriawadi are some of the other areas of the city where people have also died after consuming illicit liquor. A curfew-like situation prevailed in the affected areas, including Majoorgaam, Kantodiavaas, Gita Mandir and Behrampura.

In Amaraivadi, the situation became very tense when the bodies of the victims started arriving at their homes. In the evening, angry people came out on the roads and caused chaos by stopping public transport and pelting police vehicles with stone. A bus was also burned by the protestors.

The driver of a police jeep was injured in the stone-pelting. The police had to lob six teargas shells to control the mob.

The state’s director general of police, SS Khandwawala, issued orders suspending and transferring six police officials. The officers have been suspended for dereliction of duty and allowing the sale of spurious liquor in the area.

The suspended police officials are senior PI RG Patel and PI AA Pathan of Kagdapith police station, senior PI JP Rana and PI NG Jadeja of Odhav police station, and ACP of K division, GL Khunti, and ACP of I division, KV Vadher.
