US ambassador Timothy J Roemer today said that he was honoured to visit the home of Mahatma Gandhi and delighted to be in the state from where over 20% of the Indian-American population in his country came from.

"It is a pleasure and honour for me to visit the historic state of Gujarat. It is especially important for me to be at this Ashram where Gandhiji communicated and acted out his values," Roemer said after visiting the Gandhi Ashram here.

"Gandhiji believed in acting on his philosophy and bringing people together. He was an eloquent and precise communicator...communicating just a few words like 'Quit India' that resonated with the people of this country and helped inspire freedom and revolution here," he said.

"I am delighted not only to visit Gandhiji's home, but also to see where about 20% of Indian-Americans in the US come from. According to the last census, about 20% of Indian-Americans in the US are from Gujarat," Roemer added.

The ambassador said that the trade, commerce and people to people ties have brought the communities in Gujarat and US closer on the world stage.

After visiting 'Hriday Kunj', the place where Gandhiji lived, Roemer wrote in the visitor's book, "It is great honour to visit the hallowed and historic ground of Gandhiji's home."

"The inspiration from his actions on civil disobedience to march to Dandi to protest the salt tax showed his devotion to acting on his beliefs," Roemer wrote in the visitor's book.

"His (Gandhiji's) word 'Quit India' showed his eloquence to communicate with his country and he has connected with America, Dr (Martin Luther) King, and President (Barack) Obama. We are grateful," he wrote.

Roemer also visited the Gujarat Vidhyapeet, an education institute founded by Mahatma Gandhi, interacted with the faculty there and also spun khadi.

He is scheduled to meet members of Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) and some local businessmen later in the day.
