Pravin Patel, the first swine flu victim in Ahmedabad, hails from Paliyad village in Kalol taluka of north Gujarat. He is survived by his wife and three children. His wife has also been tested H1N1 positive and is undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital. Her condition is reported to be stable.

Pravin had been in the US for almost 20 years and owned a store in Atlanta. He was in Ahmedabad to visit his elder brother Dasarath Patel, who lives in Ranip area of the city.
He landed in Ahmedabad on July 31 along with his wife, leaving his three children with his mother in Atlanta.  His eldest daughter Hiral is 16 years old, while younger daughter Ilu is 14 and son Shan is all of 11. Another brother, Shailesh Patel, is also settled in Atlanta where he too owns a store.

After arriving in Ahmedabad, Pravin Patel complained of fever and cough. He was taken to a physician Dr Bhikhubhai Patel, who gave him medicines for three days.

When the condition of Patel deteriorated, he was admitted to Sanjivani Hospital in Vadaj area where he was under the supervision of Dr Bharat Patel, said Darsarath Patel, the victim's elder brother. Dr Patel got various tests, related to kidney, lever, heart and blood sugar, conducted on Pravin Patel. However, Pravin did not show any sign of recovery during the treatment, he said.

Finally, he was brought to Civil Hospital on Friday evening where he was declared H1N1 positive by the hospital authorities and kept in an isolated ward for swine flu patients. Around 15 other relatives of Patel were also given medicines for precaution. It was a double blow for the Patels when Naina, the victim's wife, also tested positive for swine flu.

Pravin Patel breathed his last in the isolated ward of Civil Hospital on August 8 midnight.
