The number of students appearing for standard XII-Science examination of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHEB) in 2012 has reached 1.14 lakh, the highest ever. This is an increase of around 24% from the last year's number of 91,699 students.

The figures were given by senior board officials as the registration for the board   examination ended. According to officials, the general steam has not seen major increase with the number of total students appearing for the examination touched 4.36 lakh from the last year's number of around 4.25 lakh. This is around 3% rise in the number of students.

Of the science stream students, around 98,000 are first-time students and the rest are repeaters. Officials said even the figure of 98,000 is highest ever as last years' figure of 91,699 was inclusive of the repeater students.

"This might be the result of good percentiles given in the Std X exam. Higher marks might have encouraged students to take up science stream or may be the students' interest in science is increasing," said a senior official. According to him, the number of students appearing for standard XI-Science this year has reached 1.2 lakh.

Interestingly, number of repeater students in class X has gone down to 1.28L students compared to last year's figure of around 2.39L. This might be because last year in July, many students had appeared for two subjects in supplementary exam, he said.

He said, because of this, the number of students appearing for the standard X exam has reduced to 9.25 lakh from 9.54 lakh last year.
