High alert over a dozen dams in Gujarat

These reservoirs are those which are more than 80% full; there is 35% more water in most of the water bodies than this time last year.

The water level in dams in the state has risen further owing to steady rainfall in different areas over the past week. Over a dozen dams in the state are on an alert or high alert.

The average water stored in the 200 dams in the state is more than 37%, according to the water resources department. The water stored is 2.09 lakh million cubic feet (mcf) as against total storage capacity of 5.63 lakh mcf. The water available in the reservoirs is 35% more than the previous year.

According to the state government, water stored in dams in north Gujarat has increased to 13.51% of  total storage capacity, while it has gone up to 17.43% in the case of dams in Kutch.

Water level in dams in central Gujarat is around 32% of total storage capacity, while it has gone up to 42.70% in south Gujarat dams.

The water level in dams in Saurashtra is the highest at 43.74%, which is adequate to meet drinking water needs of the region till next June.

Seven reservoirs in Saurashtra, which are more than 90% filled, are on high alert. These include Lalpari and Machhu II in Rajkot and Nayka, Dholidhaja, Trivenithanga, Vansal and Saburi reservoirs in Surendranagar.

Five other reservoirs in Saurashtra, viz. Aji III, Brahmani, Vadia, Hasanpur and Nyari II are on alert. Water stored in these reservoirs is more than 80% of their capacity. Warnings have been issued at ten other reservoirs which are more than 70% filled, said officials.

The water stored in Sardar Sarovar Project, the lifeline of Gujarat, is 84.25%. As against total storage capacity of 1.85 lakh mcf, the water available is 1.56 lakh mcf. The dam’s crest level is 121.92 metre, while the present water level is 116.63 metre.
