Gujarat Science City conducted a day-long workshop, a day before the lunar eclipse on Wednesday night. The workshop saw participation of science enthusiasts and schoolchildren.

Interactive sessions with eminent experts to make people understand the phenomenon  of eclipse along with eclipse related quizzes, puzzles, and games were held.

Retd senior professor at Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) Ahmedabad, JR Trivedi told DNA that the eclipse would be seen across more than half the world for 100 minutes (1 hour 40 minutes 52 seconds). It will be clearly visible in Ahmedabad and Amdavadis wil have ample time to witness the various phases of the eclipse.”

However, the overcast sky and scattered rain somehwat dampened the spirits of the lunar eclipse watchers.

Trivedi  added that unlike solar eclipses, not many scientific studies can be conducted at the time of lunar eclipse as there is no occurrence of any scientific phenomena. “Lunar eclipse is nothing but shadow of earth on Moon, unlike solar eclipse where the Sun is covered by the shadow of Moon.”

The eclipse was one of the darkest lunar eclipses in 100 years as the centres of Sun, Moon and Earth lied nearly on one straight line. A similar eclipse occurred on August 6, 1971 and the next in future will occur on June 6, 2058, that is 47 years from now.

Speaking on the eclipse, senior scientist at Science City, Narottam Sahoo said that this is one of the six eclipses that will take place in 2011 and is the first of the two lunar eclipses of this year. During the entire phase, the Moon will travel 9,630 km.

The amphitheatre of the Science City was set for viewing the eclipse through telescopes. Special shows were held to screen the 3D movie ‘Walking on the Moon’.
