The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has decided to install around 24 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at this historical lake.
Mind your moves at Kankaria Lake as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to soon keep a close watch on all visitors.
After suggestions from the city police, the civic body has decided to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at this historical lake during the upcoming Kankaria Carnival when thousands will throng the popular place.
Senior AMC officials, though, said that there is nothing unusual about this move. The corporation installs such cameras at the lake every year during the annual festivity, they said. This year's Kankaria Carnival begins from December 25.
However, officials said that this time around, they plan to permanently install CCTV cameras, keeping in mind the rise in number of visitors at the lakeside. The AMC has already floated tenders inviting expression of interest from the private bidders to set up around 24 CCTV cameras.
"This year, we have decided to install the cameras permanently as per the city police's suggestion. It is aimed at improving the safety measures.
We have decided to install around 24 cameras. The spots will include all entry points including Kamla Nehru zoological garden, Bal-Vatika, Naginawadi, railway station, kids' city etc," said a senior AMC official.
The officials said that the new initiative could cost the civic body around Rs18 lakh to Rs20 lakh. Going by the claims of the AMC,
the surveillance cameras will be in place before the carnival this year.
The private bidders' responsibility will include supply and installation of cameras, recording the same and setting up control room for the system.
"Moreover, the cameras should be able to cover the entire area of Kankaria Lakefront. The system will also have remote control features and an option of IP-based surveillance with IR operations," said the official.
