Munnabhai MBBS may have won everyone's heart despite his fraudulent ways, but 21 fake doctors in the city, have not been so lucky. On Monday when the health department officials of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)'s south zone conducted a health check, they found 21 fake allopathy doctors operating in the zone.

The civic body has served closure notice and sealed the clinics of the 21 quacks. Six of them were from Lambha ward and three from Behrampura. There were one each from Vatva, Danilimda and Maninagar, two from Kankaria, two from Indrapuri ward and three from Ghodasar ward.

Speaking to DNA, deputy health officer of south zone, Dr Tejas Shah, said that not all of them were fake doctors. "On inspection, we found that majority of those who were served notices had fake degrees. A few doctors had diploma and bachelor's degree in homeopathy but were practising allopathy, which is not allowed. So we served notices asking them to stop practising the line of medicine in which they do not have degree."

As per the notice, if any such doctor is found trying to practise again, strict legal action will be taken as per Medical Practioners Act. However, when the health officials checked the south zone again on Tuesday, Dilipkumar Pandey of Indrapuri, who had been earlier served notice, was still operating at his clinic 'Kiran'. The clinic was sealed by the officials.

Secretary of Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) Dr Jignesh Shah said, "It is highly risky for the patients to be treated by a quack. Our association has given a list of those with fake degrees who are illegally operating clinics. I believe no action has been taken against these quacks till now by the police or any authority. There are 50-odd quacks in the city whose names have been submitted to the police by the association and strict action should be taken against them."

Shah further said that for practising, a proper degree from an institute recognised by Medical Council of India (MCI) is a must.
