Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi has assured the newly elected legislators in Uttar Pradesh that accountability will be fixed at all levels and ‘heads shall roll’ for non-performance in the elections that saw the party bite dust and finish fourth with a measly 28 out of the 403 seats.
“Bade balidaan honge (big heads shall be sacrificed),” said Kazim Ali alias Navaid Mian, MLA from Suar, speaking to reporters after meeting with the party general secretary.
Ali was critical of union ministers who had issued controversial statements during the election campaign. “He has promised us that everyone howsoever highly placed he or she may be would be held accountable,” added Ali.
Others legislators also confirmed that Rahul had asserted that action would be taken within a month.
Apart from this accountability fixing, Rahul is reported to have directed the legislators to effectively discharge the role of opposition in the state. “This is our mandate, and we have to keep an eye on the Samajwadi Party government’s performance,” said PCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi.
As a part of the follow-up steps to be taken following this two-day review exercise it is expected that the entire organizational structure in the state would be revamped. “Most legislators and the defeated candidates have complained that the district committees did not support them,” said a senior legislator.
The party is expected to fight urban local body elections due in the next six weeks, and plan for the panchayat elections. “We had neglected these aspects to our peril, and discovered that we do not have the support system at these levels,” the senior legislator added.
