CBI today took into its custody two accused of the Gyaneshwari Express disaster that left 148 people dead on May 28 in West Bengal.

The process of handover was approved by additional chief judicial magistrate Sheikh Mohammed Rezza here following a petition by CBI, which will now take over probe of the disaster from CID.

On June 3 and 7, CID arrested Khagen Mahato and Samir Mahato in connection with the mishap.

On the other hand, the court granted the CBI prayer to produce the accused on June 17.

Responding to defence lawyer Kaushik Sinha, the judge asked the CBI to ensure routine medical check-up and adequate food to the accused.

Both the accused complained to the judge that they had been physically tortured by CID sleuths.
