Nobel laureate poet, novelist and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore's 150th birth anniversary falls on Saturday. Interestingly, Tagore, who was also a dancer and painter of repute, shared an interesting connection with the city of Ahmedabad.

Tagore visited Ahmedabad in 1878 at the age of 17. During those days, Tagore's elder brother Satyendranath Tagore was the commissioner of Ahmedabad city. Also, Satyendranath was the first ICS officer in Ahmedabad.

Rabindranath Tagore during those days stayed at 'Motisahi Mahal' of Ahmedabad. Built by Moghul emperor Shahjahan in 1622, the building is now known as Sardar Patel Smarak Bhavan, situated at Shahibaug. Tagore used to stay in one of the small rooms of the building.

Stating the purpose of his visit, the joint secretary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial Society, Prabhakar Khamar said, "Satyendranath wanted Tagore to go to England for further studies. So, he invited Tagore to stay with him and learn English literature. Tagore accompanied his brother to Ahmedabad and learnt English literature for six months before he went to England."

In fact, Ahmedabad has a small contribution in producing some of the best writings of Tagore.

"During his six-month stay in the city, Tagore wrote some of the pages of his popular novel titled in Bengali 'Sudat Pashan' (Hungry Stone). Tagore also wrote two poems titled 'Bandi O Amaar…' and 'Nelav Rajni Dekho...' while his stay here," said Khamar.

Tagore was so happy with the city that he has mentioned about the Sabarmati River in one of his writings and also has written three articles on the city.

The Sardar Patel Smarak Bhavan of the city will conduct an exhibition on the life of Tagore with his paintings, old photographs and original writings. The exhibition will be open from May 7 till May 15 at the art gallery of the bhavan.
