Gujarat Technological University (GTU) will take a tough stand on those colleges which are yet to start Women Development Cell (WDC) in their premises. According to GTU vice-chancellor Dr Akshai Aggarwal, the university has started sending reminders in this regard to all affiliated colleges.

Dr Aggarwal said, “Out of 490 colleges and institutes, we have not received intimation from more than 100 colleges about WDC on their premises.” “It is compulsory for all colleges to have their own WDC to solve issues pertaining to female students,” he added.

According to guidelines issued by Supreme Court, University Grants Commission (UGC) and Ministry of Human Resource Development, each college must have its own WDC to help female students to solve cases of harassment, including sexual harassment on the premises. It also ensures gender equality and provides a favorable environment for female students.

According to Dr Aggarwal, more than 300 colleges and institutes under GTU have submitted their details about WDC in March. However about 100 others are yet to oblige. “We want each college to understand that it is compulsory to have their own WDC,” added Dr Aggarwal.

The WDC issue came into light when a fifth semester female student of an engineering college filed a written complaint about alleged mental and sexual harassment with the university. The girl personally met the V-C and explained her trouble. Subsequently, the college principal and staff met the V-C in the office but the trustee was missing.

Learning from this incident, Dr Aggarwal inquired about WDC in all other affiliated colleges. “If any college has not opened it yet, we will ask them to start before before the nest session commences in August,” said Aggarwal.
