Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has decided to bear the costs of gold medals after only three sponsors came forward for the same.

GTU wants to award gold medals to students who topped in engineering and pharmacy courses.

The decision will cost GTU more than Rs1 lakh as it needs to sponsor around 34 gold medals with each medal costing around Rs3,500.

GTU examination controller GP Vadodaria said that the three sponsored gold medals include one medal for the topper in pharmaceutics subject of PG-pharmacy. The gold medal is sponsored by one Bimalkumar Aadaiya from Junagadh. The other two gold medals are sponsored for BE-civil engineering and BE-mechanical engineering toppers.

Vadodaria also said that the authorities had invited chief minister Narendra Modi to become chief guest at the first convocation but because of his prior engagements, he would not be able to
attend the convocation.

"As the CM is not available, we have sent invitation to L&T chairman AM Naik and managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, E Sreedharan," he said. He said that none of them had yet confirmed.

About the dress code for the varsity's first convocation, he said they have zeroed in on the off-white salwar-kurta with a stole with GTU logo on it. "We have issued order to make samples of the stole and expect to finalise a design within few days. One stole costs around Rs100 to Rs350," he said.

Around 3,500 students will be getting degrees at the first convocation of GTU scheduled to be held on January 19. Of the total, around 1,600 students will be receiving the degrees in person, said Vadodaria.
