On Sunday, Gujarat State Federation of Universities and College Teachers Associations (GSFUCTA) got the backing of its counterparts from across the country in its demand for a pay scale in accordance with the UGC's recommendations.

GSFUCTA is demanding cancellation of the state government's GR for the implementation of the sixth pay commission for college and university teachers and instead implementation of the UGC Committee's recommendations.

Nearly 2000 university and college teachers gathered at the Income Tax Crossroads in Ashram Road to stage a protest against the state government's GR.

Of the total teachers, nearly 600 are from other states of India.

The teachers are in the city to attend a three-day seminar on 'Higher Education in India: Issues and Challenges'. The seminar is organised by All India Federation of Universities and College Teachers Organizations (AIFUCTO) and hosted by GSFUCTA.

The protest led to a traffic jam at the Income Tax Crossroads on Sunday evening.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Thomas Joseph, President of AIFUCTO said, "Gujarat's professors and lecturers are not alone in their fight for their rights. All the universities and college teachers from across the country are with them. If needed, protest and demonstrations will be organised in every state of the county to support the demand of teachers from Gujarat."

Prof. Asok Burman, general secretary of AIFUCTO said, "According to the UGC 's recommendations, 80% load of the pay scale will be borne by the central government and yet the Gujarat government is not willing to give college teachers their rightful salaries. It is injustice and will not be tolerated."

KS Shashtri, president of GSFUCTA said, "The state government had assured to notify the GR according to the UGC recommendations during the meetings that were held to discuss the issue. But because of the negative attitude of the bureaucrats, the state government has been misled and it has cheated the teachers by issuing such a GR, which is unacceptable."

"We want implementation of UGC's recommendations for the sixth pay commission. We don't want anything less or more than that," said Shashtri.
