Piles of paper waste generated after submissions, studio activities and project reports might be a matter of concern for other educational institutes but not for the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (Cept).

A team of students at Cept has made it a practice to gather paper waste from the campus, recycle it in a beating machine and make visiting cards, model making boards, sound absorbing panels, handmade paper and other items.

The team works under Clean Cept Initiative - that aims to make the campus a cleaner place to work in. Students gather recyclable waste in the campus to utilise it in different ways.

A member and student at Cept, Pranav Gajjar says, "At regular intervals we collect paper waste, bring it to our workshop, make paper pulp and mould it to make handmade paper, visiting cards, cardboard and other things with the help of a paper beating machine in the campus itself."

On Ganesh Chaturthi, a bunch of students made an idol of the deity from the collected paper waste. The students maintain a blog about the team's activities.

The Clean Cept Initiative team also takes feedback from the students on different ways of keeping the campus clean. In fact, the team has also started an online survey to find out means of waste generation on campus.

The survey, which received responses from 112 people, suggests that canteen waste, specifically paper cups, generate the most waste on campus. Now, paper mugs are banned and ceramic ones are used by the canteen.

The survey revealed that 48% of the people felt that the number of dustbins on campus was insufficient. Around 73% people suggested that use of plastic should be banned and 64% said people should be fined for littering.

Other suggestions were elimination of printing of reports and online submissions, making posters using reusable paper and keeping dogs outside the campus since they topple the bins in search of food.
