To mark the achievements of chemistry and its contribution to mankind, the United Nations (UN) has declared this year as International Year of Chemistry.

And the icing on the cake is that from the country, Gujarat Science City (GSC) has been recognised as a member institution to initiate and design awareness and science popularisation activities and outreach programmes at local, regional and national level.

Outlining the design of the series of programmes planned by GSC, executive director of GSC, Dilip Gadhavi said, "Activities, such as training programmes, workshops, seminars, popular science lectures, interactive exhibits, and hands-on experiments and demonstrations, will be conducted to create awareness on how chemical research is critical for solving our most vexing global problems involving food, water, health, energy, transportation, and more."

GSC and Vigyan Prasar have joined hands for this outreach programme, for designing, developing and distributing chemistry kits all across India. The activity kits of chemistry will be distributed to about 15,000 science clubs and scientific institutions all over India.

Interestingly, the attractive chemistry kit will have a number of activities for children and adults. The kit will have about 40 activities including 15 hands on chemistry activities, 14 do-it-yourself activities, games, puzzles and informative posters.
