Gujarat remembers Narayana Guru, the reformer

Thousands of devotees participated in a procession by followers of Shree Narayana Guru on Sunday. The procession, which started from Shree Narayana Cultural Mission (SNCM), moved around Satellite area with a specially designed chariot and decorated vehicles along with the devotees chanting guru's mantra with Panchavadhyam (an orchestra of five instruments) playing.  The variety of decorations and the huge crowd made the procession very devotional and colourful.  The procession culminated at the Guru's temple on the temple premises.

Speaking to DNA, trustee of SNCM, K Prakash said, "Sivagiri Theerthadanam (pilgrimage) is the annual festival of this ashram, which was conceptualised by the great Hindu reformer Shree Narayana Guru to accomplish the goals of promoting  education, cleanliness, devotion to God, need for organisation, trade, handicrafts and technical training.  This festival is celebrated in January every year." Hence, to mark this day, the devotees take out the procession on feet in memory of Shree Narayana Guru who walked different parts of India to promote education, cleanliness etc.

He further said that discussions are organised and distinguished leaders and scholars in the field of education, industries, social and religious organisations, etc. are invited on this occasion. Religious discourses are also organised during these days at Sivagiri, an ashram in South India founded by Shree Narayana Guru.  

Apart from the huge procession, a fully operational state-of-the-art computer lab was inaugurated on Sunday. "This lab will enable our teachers to be more efficient in the classroom and help students to learn more about themselves, their surroundings and the outside world. The lab is sponsored by State Bank of India. It is air-conditioned and is equipped with 60 new computers, a projector screen and projector," said Harshan VV, executive member.

Addressing the gathering, Poojya Saigan Swamiji, Kaladi Ashram, Kerala, the chief guest of the function, emphasised on the importance of Guru's preaching and the necessity to follow his principles in life. Over 2,500 devotees took part in the cultural meet. Cultural performances and comedy show by artistes entertained the audience for the day.
