As many as 40 senior police officers from across the country joined police officers of Gujarat on Friday at the All India Police Housing Conference in Ahmedabad to hammer out a common policy on police housing.

The participating policemen will also try to fix the responsibility of the state governments and the central government, respectively, in this regard.

Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation (GSPHC) managing director K Nityanandam told reporters at the opening ceremony of the conference that the participants expected to be ready with a common policy by the end of the two-day seminar.

This policy will then be sent to the central government, he added.
The national average of 'satisfaction level' regarding availability of housing for the police is 40% while it is around 80% in Gujarat.

“The national average of allotment of houses to officials should also increase,” Nityanandam told DNA.

Senior police officers of the rank of inspector general (IG) to even director general of the police (DGP) will be sharing their experiences in this connection.

More importantly, they will be discussing the housing and housing technology available to the police in Gujarat and in other states, Nityanandam said.

Various aspects of police housing such as new technology, land requirements, and legal provisions will be discussed at the seminar, after which the participating delegates are expected to formulate a policy to submit it to the central government.

"I believe the central government will accept the policy and implement it at the earliest," Nityanandam said.

The seminar was inaugurated by chief minister Narendra Modi. In his inaugural speech, the chief minister said a co-ordinated effort to use human resources and technologies from across the country should be made to provide better housing to the police.

He proposed multi-storied buildings which could provide space for police housing as well as offices.
