Do you feel working at lower levels in an organisation is a pain and doesn’t yield you much in terms of monetary gains? Think again, as positions hardly matter when it comes to deciding the remuneration of an employee.

The salaries of more than half a dozen contractual employees of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) are many times higher than that of their boss, the GSPC managing director, Tapan Ray. According to GSPC’s annual report for 2010-11, which was tabled in the state assembly recently, Alan Brambaugh, who works as senior drilling engineer on a contractual basis with GSPC, was paid remuneration of $1,750 per day. In rupee terms, this works out to Rs87, 500 per day or over R25 lakh a month.

Daniel Barrow, employed as well-testing engineer by the state owned company, was paid $1,500 per day, i.e. Rs75,000 per day — approximately Rs22.50 lakh per month - in 2010-11. Similarly, Alok Chaudhari, employed as GSPC’s senior V-P (engineering & construction), since March 2010, received remuneration of Rs6.50 lakh per month in 2010-11.

The annual report shows that GSPC’s senior executive V-P (drilling), Rakesh Johri, took home Rs6.80 lakh per month during the year, while executive vice-president, Vijay Vir Singh, was paid remuneration of Rs5.75 lakh a month. As against this, the pay band of GSPC MD, Tapan Ray, an IAS officer of 1981 batch and holding a rank of principal secretary, is Rs67,000-79,000. His total salary is approximately Rs1.35 lakh to Rs1.40 lakh.

Similarly, Gujarat's chief secretary AK Joti, who is also the chairman of GSPC, draws a remuneration of around Rs1.60 lakh-Rs1.70 lakh per month. There are also a number of other contractual employees of GSPC whose remuneration is significantly higher than the GSPC managing director. Viral Shah, who has been employed with the GSPC on a contractual basis since September 2004, received a remuneration of Rs5.69 lakh per month. Similarly, PN Ramesh, engaged as a company man, received Rs5.31 lakh per month as remuneration in 2010-11.

"These contractual employees are specialists in their respective fields and the money they receive is in line with what their peers make in the private sector. The oil & gas sector is highly competitive, and big money has to be paid to attract the best talent," said a GSPC official, requesting anonymity.
