Gujaratis are renowned for eking out capital from the most barren propositions — but Navsari’s Anil Vashi has made particularly lush profits from Dubai, selling the world’s infertile marketing paradise more than one lakh trees!

Vashi’s nursery straddles an area of more than 100 acres in the Ambehta village in Navsari district, 30 km from Surat. The products of the business, called the Samir Nursery, have not only infused Dubai with rich greenery over the past five years, but have also embellished the garden of the monarch of the United Arab Emirates.

Vashi’s nursery has also been supplying plants and readymade trees to almost all Tata’s facilities, such as Tesco in Pune and the Nano unit in Sanand.

“Dubai can’t grow trees because of its barren soil,” Vashi said. “Now if you go to Dubai, you will see that Indian trees offer shade and beauty to every street.”

Vashi has named his nursery after his 30-year-old son, Samir, but the business is a century old. As for Dubai, the business idea flowered as a result of a thought of MD Sharma, the chief horticulturist of Tesco.

After researching on the demands of Dubai’s ‘green market’, Vashi began exporting trees through an English firm. He has exported a range of offerings to Dubai, including a 25 ft long Gulmohar, Peltophorum (a flowering tree), Raintree, and Plumeria (deciduous shrubs and trees of tropical America).

The father-son wants to beautify the Indian roadside and streets with their grown trees. But, they concede that the mission would be challenging because the country was not familiar with such a landscaping concept.
