The echoes of “your honour” rang loud and clear in the corridors of the Gujarat National Law University as young students clad in black robes put across their individual arguments like seasoned lawyers. The arguments being presented were part of the National Moot Court Competition organised by the Gujarat National Law University on January 10.  A total of 32 teams from different cities of India took part in the competition.

Moot court refers to a mock court where law students argue on hypothetical cases.

The preliminary events began on January 8. The event also saw a healthy debate on whether the Indian judiciary should be made more transparent for the public.

The finals saw the best student advocates being chosen from among more than 250 participants, who checked their advocacy skill in the first round of a trial.

GNLU intends to make the moot court an annual event, garnering participation from national and international legal fraternities. The objective is to provide a credible platform to talented law students to measure their legal acumen and verbal capacity.

"We at GNLU are of the firm belief that one cannot merely 'study' law, the law is a way of life. A moot court competition stimulates the perfect environment for aspiring lawyers to hone their problem solving skills by facing peers from other law schools in a battle of wits, research skills and intelligence," said Shobhlata Udapudi dean, academic affairs, GNLU.  The competition was divided into three stages — preliminary round, semi finals and finals. Each team had two members and the competition brought forth the exceptional talent, confidence and enthusiasm of the students.  The Gujarat government has also supported the students by providing them with financial aid in representing the university across the world for the purposes of 'mooting'.

In the last academic year alone, GNLU has participated in over 30 international and national moot court competitions. National University of Judicial Science from Kolkata, NALSAR Hyderabad, NUALS Cochin and University of Pune were the four teams to have made it to the finals held on January 10. Ashok Kumar Deb, managing trustee, Bar Council of India Trust, justice RR Tripathi, judge, high court of Gujarat, justice AAH Qureshi, judge, high court of Gujarat, Dr Shobhlata Udapudi, dean, academic affairs, GNLU and SNP Sinha, chairman, bar council of India were on the judging panel for the final round of the moot court competition.
NALSAR Hyderabad was declared the winner. They were adjudged the winner for their case presentation and arguing skills.  Justice Gyansudha Mishra, chief justice, high court of Jharkhand gave away the awards to the wining team.
