Success stories from land reform activists of other states, especially MP, have pushed their Gujarati counterparts to join a massive non-violent movement against the central government on March 7, to demand implementation of land reform policies that were formed in October 2009 by the Land Reforms Council.

"Approximately 12,200 activists from 15 states will come together for a dhyanakarshan sabha (meeting to seek attention of government), to be held in New Delhi from March 6-8. Thirty grassroots level leaders from Gujarat have also registered to participate in this rally," said Rannsingh Permar, national convener of Ekta Parishad. Ekta Parishad is an NGO and a people's movement which aims to help India's poor gain control over livelihood resources, especially land, water and forest through non-violent means.

The three-day event will have solidarity talks between victims of land grabbing or acquisition and politicians, chetawani (warning) march to Parliament on March 7 and grievance and solution talks on March 8 (International Women's Day), for land and women's rights.

"Land grabbing or acquisition is taking place at a fast pace all over India. Land reforms are found only on paper and the government is not putting it in practice. Laws that are implemented on land are not pro-poor. Tribal communities, small farmers and landless people can either choose to accept this with resignation and remain submissive, or challenge the government's priorities. We have chosen the latter," said Permar who has also warned of other steps including a nationwide march and a dharna outside the Parliament house, in the event of government apathy.
