In view of the increasing number of cases of diabetes in India and especially in Gujarat, the state government will train its doctors in diabetes management in order to spread awareness among people and to identify those who are more susceptible to
developing the disease.

The Gujarat chapter of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) will educate postgraduate students of medicine in diabetes management. This training will allow to them to pass on the benefits of their learning to patients and those prone to the disease. The RSSDI has also launched a project, called Kadam, to spread awareness among the residents of Ahmedabad and the rural areas adjoining the city.

“There are few specialised diabetes centres in government hospitals, unlike \in private hospitals. Therefore, this kind of education and training programmes for MD and MBBS students in government and private clinics will slow down the increase in the number of diabetes patients,” said Dr Bansi Saboo, organising secretary, Gujarat chapter, RSSDI.

Keeping this mind, RSSDI has organised a weeklong awareness and guidance programme at the Gujarat University ground. The programme will feature yoga sessions, walks, food management and other related activities, Saboo said. In addition to this, RSSDI has organised a two-day exhibition on diabetes at the same venue. Around 30,000 doctors are expected to participate in the programme.

“Our sole aim is to generate the maximum awareness among the people. Diabetics can understand the causes of the problem and learn to avoid complications of the disease. Along with this, doctors will be able to make others aware and try and halt the increase in cases,” said Dr Danish Agarwal, treasurer, RSSDI.

According to medical experts, one person dies from diabetes-related problems every 10 seconds. It is the fifth largest killer disease in the world, and in India alone more than 49 million people suffer from diabetes. Surprisingly, 50% of the diabetics are unaware that they are affected.
