Junagadh Congress on Monday gave a three-day ultimatum to state government to pay Rs5 lakh compensation to each of the 23 HIV affected Thalassemic children. Meanwhile, authorities remained tight lipped about the findings of the one-member expert team from Gandhinagar which visited Junagadh on Sunday.

“We have submitted a memorandum to the Junagadh district collector demanding compensation of Rs5 lakh each to the families of the HIV affected patients,” Pravin Tank, president of Junagadh City Congress unit, said. He added, “We have also demanded strict action against those responsible for the incident and also requested Jaynarayan Vyas to personally visit the town before giving a clean chit to officials of the civil hospital.”

Tank further said that Congress has planned to stage protests at the civil hospital from Thursday if their demands are not meet within three days.

Meanwhile, the one member expert team of Dr Sunil Avashia, deputy director, state health department, which had landed in Junagadh on Sunday night, completed its probe and returned to Gandhinagar on Monday morning.

But authorities were tight-lipped about the findings. “We have given the required information to the team. At this stage, we cannot reveal any details,” said GT Dayalu, civil surgeon of the Junagadh Civil Hospital. District collector Aashirvad Parmar also refused to divulge any information.

However, blood transmission to Thalassemia patients will continue as per schedule on Tuesdays and Fridays. “There is nothing wrong in the procedure we follow. We will continue to treat the patients as per schedule,” Dr Dayalu added.
