Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry gets steering panel

Sanjay Lalbhai to chair steering committee, Rajiv Modi & Naishadh Parikh also part of the team.

The drama at Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) took a new turn on Monday. The high-powered committee (HPC) of GCCI announced a new steering committee to take care of day-to-day activities of the chamber till fresh elections are held. The steering committee will have five members chaired by Sanjay Lalbhai.

After its extraordinary general meeting on Saturday, the HPC said that a CEO instead of an administrator be appointed. "But now, we have decided to form a five-member steering committee which will manage the daily activities of the chamber on behalf of the high-powered committee," Jehangir Cama, member of HPC told the media on Monday.

The chairman of HPC, Karsanbhai Patel, said that Sanjay Lalbhai, chairman of Arvind Mills, will chair the new steering committee. "This committee will have five members out of which three have agreed to be part of it. Lalbhai, who is the grandson of the founder of GCCI, will chair and Rajiv I  Modi, son of Indravadan Modi of Cadila Pharmaceutical and Naishadh I Parikh will be members of the steering committee," said Patel and added that two more members will be finalised soon.

Cama further said that the role of the steering committee will be to manage all daily activities of GCCI. "They will manage communication with government, trade and all other daily activities of the chamber. They will also decide on finalising the five members for the Swarnim Gujarat Committee," said Cama.
 
Talking about elections, Patel said that the HPC has to announce fresh elections within nine months. "As per amendments, HPC will have to announce fresh elections of executive members and office-bearers in six months and if we cannot, we can get an extension of three months.But, we will not take so much time. We will announce fresh elections as soon as possible," said Patel.
