While the babus from Gujarat sitting pretty in Delhi are unwilling to move, those here are not very keen about Delhi. Or at least not keen on a touch-and-go trip and a little chat up with their colleagues. Recently, a reunion of all central and all India services officers belonging to the 1984 batch was organised at Delhi. Surprisingly none of the officers from Gujarat found the event attractive enough to attend.

Gujarat has four Indian administrative services (IAS), four Indian forest services (IFS) and three Indian police services (IPS) officer in its cadres belonging to 1984 batch. Surprisingly, none of the 11 officers were present in Delhi on Saturday. It may have been for the first time that not a single officer from any of the services belonging to Gujarat cadre went for the reunion.

“While, silver jubilee reunions are an annual affair where those central and all India services officers, who have completed 25 years in service get together, it is once in a lifetime event for that particular batch. Catching up with old pals at the same time and sharing old memories are the best parts of the occasion,” said a senior IAS recalling his reunion some years back.

Of the IAS officers, PK Taneja, Arvind Agrawal, MS Dagur and Chhotilal Meena belong to the said batch. Taneja, social justice secretary to state government was to coordinate for Gujarat officers, however, a family tragedy called him away before the event. Surprisingly, none of the other three also made it to the reunion due to either personal or professional reasons.

Similarly, four IFS officer: BJ Pathak, Ashok Kumar Saxena, SN Taygi, and RL Meena, and three IPS officers: Tirthraj, Rakesh Asthana and GK Parmar also did not attend. While some of them complained of not being informed, others cited personal commitment and even claimed not being well on the day. Interestingly, the officers were expected to confirm in advance and as none of them informed the organising volunteering colleagues giving the event a miss was not a chance thing.

Meanwhile, the reunion was a hit with over 210 officers, and a number of them with their spouses, were part of it. Madan R Pania, an Indian postal service officer of the batch even developed a website for the occasion, lbsnaa84.com, and uploaded old and new pictures.
