The transfer of 50 IPS officers, some with promotion, is an indication about the coming assembly elections and is meant to lay the groundwork to ensure that nothing goes 'wrong' during the elections scheduled in eight months' time. These 50 transfers are considered to be one of the biggest for IPS officers and more of them are likely to be moved soon.

Some freshly recruited and young IPS officers have been given charge of the districts. Out of the total transfers, as many as 12 are of young officers who have been assigned districts like Tapi, Kutch (East), Dang, Sabarkantha, Navsari and Bhavnagar.

"They have a long career ahead of them and would not want to spoil their relationship with the state government at any level, be it elections or not," a cop, on condition of anonymity, told DNA.

The cop also said that the transfers are focused mainly with the elections in mind. The officers' equation with the state government has been taken into consideration at the higher level before the transfers were announced.

Sources in the state home department told DNA that now the transfer of the ADGP will be announced. "This transfer will also be based on the government's equations," the source said.

On the one hand, when the Ishrat Jahan encounter investigator Satish Verma has earned the wrath of the state government and has been sent to the Junagadh training institute - a prime 'punishment' post -- officers like Atul Karwal, believed to be the most efficient police officer in the state, too has been sent to a non-policing post.

A cop told DNA that Karwal could have wanted to remain away from hectic policing for some time and could have asked for this transfer.

"Some efficient cops, who did not toe the government line during the elections, have been shifted to non-policing posts at different police agencies," the source said.
