Hard work pays. This seems to be true for Gujarat Technological University (GTU) these days. GTU's efforts to boost innovation quotient of its students appear to have yielded fruits.

The varsity celebrated one year of formation of 25 Innovation Sankuls existing in different pockets of Gujarat. GTU has dedicated set-ups —Innovation Sankuls— for boosting the innovation level of students. Last week, 50 patents were filed by the students and faculties affiliated to the university, the authorities claim.

The news comes as a ray of hope for those who are concerned about students performing well in the field of innovation. The latest to join the club of filing patents at the Patent Office, Mumbai are four students from Baroda College of Pharmacy who filed provisional patents in December last year. Hiranmay Mahanta, coordinator of GTU Innovation Council, said the idea is to encourage students to think innovatively. As part of the council, they organise seminars, lectures, and interactive sessions every weekend.

“There are around 16,000 new projects made by students and faculties at GTU. We plan to select 1,000 such projects. As we have succeeded in filing 50 provisional patents last time, in the coming years we aim to take the number to 1,000,” he said.

According to Mahanta, the interesting part is that the students who have filed the patents hail from rural parts of Dahod, Panchmahals, Kutch and Saurashtra. He also said that there are states which have a policy to boost innovation among students. Being a leader in entrepreneurship, Gujarat should also have such policies, he said.
