Considering the gravity of the situation, district administration appointed a geologist to investigate the matter. “We don't want to take any chance and so have appointed a geologist at the earliest who will submit a report to us based on his investigations,” said HK Vyas, deputy collector of Olpad.
The local administration and residents are irked by the continuing problem. Water pressure last Tuesday was the same and to learn about its cause, ONGC set up a temporary laboratory at the spot. Water was collected every six hours to find out its hardness. Sources said hardness in the water was much higher than the normal level, making it unfit for usage.
The residents said the company tried to recharge its well number 4, which created the pressure and led to water spurting from borewells. The well which is not in use since many years is located at Dada Saheb cemetery on the outskirts of Olpad town.
“ONGC employees were trying to recharge the well, which has been closed for many years. For this the company brought engineers and required machinery to the site. It is due to this process, that gas leaked and groundwater level rose,” Yunus Sheikh, a local resident, said.
