An innovative initiative from Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC)  to introduce a golf driving range at Sankey Lake has run into rough weather with local residents opposing the idea, which is still in conceptual stages.

KSTDC has proposed to introduce a golf driving range at Sankey Lake in association with a few private players. A golf driving range is a place where people practise playing golf. Normally in golf areas, this is a netted place. But some players also practise on water bodies, wherein soft balls float on the water and the player hits the ball by standing on the side of the lake at a floating target.
Experts have already shown the red signal to the proposal, terming it as a not eco-friendly.

“The idea is not feasible as it will hurt the aquatic life system. The balls hit by golf players will hurt the flying birds too. Several aquatic micro organisms and avian life will be affected due to this project. A proper environmental study in should be conducted first,” environmentalist AN Yellappa Reddy said.

Residents are against any developmental work and commercialisation of the Sankey Tank.

“This is our lake and we will not allow anybody to spoil it with any commercial activities. Playing golf on the lake will affect aquatic and avian life and will not be allowed in the lake,” asserted Sankey Park and Walkers Association secretary Vijay Kumar.

“The idea is to entertain evening walkers and retired folks. The cost of the project will be ascertained only after getting Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP’s) permission. Since these are soft balls they will not go far and will not hurt birds or aquatic life,” KSTDC managing director Vinay Luthra told DNA.

BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena has decided to handle the issue very carefully. “The proposal is with us and we have not taken any decision in this regard yet. We will discuss with experts and officials as these things are sensitive,” Meena said.
