His is a grassroot innovation in the truest sense of the word, and one that may also get a boost from the state government very soon. The efforts of Natthubhai Vadher, a farmer from the state who has been trying to devise an effective 'cotton picker' for long, have finally paid off. State agriculture minister Dilip Sanghani has shown interest in his idea, which, on materialising, will significantly reduce the burden of several farmer families.

Vadher hails from a small village in Gujarat. On Monday, this farmer met Sanghani in Gandhinagar, and explained his concept of an innovative machine that automatically picks cotton balls from plants. Sanghani has shown interest in the idea, and has asked Vadher to show the machine to researchers at the Junagadh Agricultural University.

Vadher had earlier written a letter to chief minister Narendra Modi, asking to meet him and explain his innovation to him. However, occupied with other engagements, Modi asked Sanghani to do the needful.

"Vadher had come with cuttings and photographs of the machine. I have asked him to explain the working and feasibility of the machine to experts at the Junagadh Agricultural University. If we get a nod from the experts on the feasibility aspect, the state government will provide farmers benefits on usage of the said equipment on a large scale," Sanghani told DNA.

According to Vadher, Sanghani also said that if the innovative product emerges as a useful equipment, they will also subsidise it to promote its use in the state. "I am yet to file a patent on my 'cotton-picker' though, which I'm working to improve with financial help of Rs1.5 lakh from SRISTI," said Vadher.

Vadher claims he has been working on the cotton-picker since a decade. He says he had already created a model earlier, but he wishes to better its technical specifications, and is hence, still working on the product. He now expects the improved version of the cotton-picker to be ready within a couple of months.
