The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will utilise a global positioning system (GPS) to monitor solid waste disposal in the city. The civic body has also decided to introduce a new system for contracting out the work of solid waste collection and disposal in different areas of Ahmedabad.

The AMC had earlier issued contacts for collection of solid waste on the basis of homes in an area. In the new system, the contractors will be paid according to the total weight of the waste collected. Meanwhile, the GPS control room to be built for the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) will be used to monitor the process of solid waste collection and disposal.

This new system of contracts will introduce greater transparency and be more effective, said Asit Vora, chairman of the standing committee of the AMC. There had been many complaints from citizens of irregularity in the work under the old system, which, he said, the new system will resolve.

Also under the new system, the civic body will purchase 400 containers and 35 hydraulic dumper-placer units with the help of a grant under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and hand these over to the contractors, who earlier had to use their own vehicles and containers.

Rs2.12 crore will be spent to buy the 400 containers, each with a capacity of seven cubic metres. The 35 hydraulic dumper-placer units will cost a total of Rs4.67 crore. The AMC has allotted contracts of more than Rs25 crore to two private parties, for five years at the rate of around Rs5 crore per year.

The AMC has invited a private contractor from Surat to conduct a pilot project in the Vejalpur ward in the New West Zone. The contractor will collect solid waste gate to gate and then dispose of it at the dumping site. The project, if successful, will be implemented across the city in a phased manner, Vora said.

The contractor, who will be paid Rs950 per ton of solid waste, will also carry out a two-month awareness programme in the ward.
