Govt trying to work towards consensus on Telangana: PMO to CPI (M)

The government is trying to work towards a consensus on the complex issue of Telangana, the Prime Minister's Office is understood to have told the CPI (M) in a letter.

It is a complex issue and the government is trying to resolve it. It is trying to reach a consensus, the PMO is understood to have informed the Left party.

The letter is understood to have been written in response to CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat's letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking an urgent decision on the Telangana issue.

"Procrastination will only worsen the situation. I would urge you to see that a decision is taken on the matter without any further delay," Karat had said in his letter.

"We had expected that the government of India would take a decision on the matter after considering the report," he said.

The CPI(M) has been opposed in principle to the division of states created on a linguistic basis, saying that accentuation of uneven development has given a fillip to demands for separate states like Telangana and Vidarbha based on the argument of backwardness.

The party maintains that while it would fight for the development of backward regions, it would adhere to "the principled position of opposition to the division of linguistic states."
