The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is tracking about 10 non governmental organisations (NGOs) for using foreign funds to fuel anti-government protests in India. The action follows inputs coming from Indian embassies abroad that governments of some foreign countries are funding Indian NGOs to step up agitations in the rural sector and issues related to food security.

“We have information that around 10 Indian NGOs are being used to fund activities which are political in nature. Each of these NGOs has got about Rs4 crore to Rs 5 crore. If proved true, this will have serious repercussions not only on the NGOs but also the governments that are aiding them,” a senior government official said.

Sources said that if inquiries prove the allegations, the NGOs would be prosecuted under the Foreign Control Regulation Act (FCRA) and can also be charged criminally for sedition.

The MHA and its related agencies are also looking into aspects if the NGOs are getting funds for eligible work but are diverting them for illegal activities such as funding agitations of political nature.
