Welfare and cooperation minister M Kandasamy today said the government proposed to constitute a separate cell to address grievances of employees and workers in various departments.

The proposed cell would hold on the second Saturday of every month, he said inaugurating a one-day symposium organised by Confederation of Employees of Cooperative Societies, in Puducherry.

He said the cooperative movement was doing very well in Mahe and Yanam regions and there was therefore a need to tone up the societies in Puducherry and Karaikal regions.

Kandasamy also said there should be progress in procuring paddy to meet the needs of ration shops and other outlets.

Resolutions adopted at the symposium urged the government to declare staff and workers in cooperative societies as equivalent to government staff, fill all vacant posts and to constitute the 5th Pay committee.

A specific resolution demanded that the government ensure that all 90 fresh liquor licenses proposed to be issued for sale of brew through retail outlets are handed only to cooperative institutions so that financially poor societies could stabilise themselves.
