The CPI(M) today termed the compromise between the government and the opposition on the price rise issue as an "unprecedented victory", saying the ruling coalition has had to accept that its economic policies have not brought any relief to the people.

Referring to the motion brought in the Lok Sabha as a compromise between the two sides, CPI(M) leader Sitaram
Yechury said, "The government, which came to power on the slogan of 'aam aadmi', will now have to say that it will take
care of the common man."

"Effectively it would mean that the government has not taken care of the aam aadmi so far. It is a very big thing that the government is implicitly admitting that its policies have not benefitted the common man."

Terming it as "a victory unprecedented in the history of Indian Parliament", he said the resolution (moved in Lok Sabha by leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj) would have to be unanimously adopted and would be binding on the government.

"The government will resolve to take all measures to contain the adverse impact of price rise on the common man. That means the government is accepting that its policies have failed," he said.

Yechury was asked whether the opposition had climbed down
by accepting a compromise in adopting such a resolution and
giving up their demand for a debate on price rise on rules
which entailed voting. The opposition had stalled proceedings
in both Houses on this issue in the first week of the Monsoon
Session.

The CPI(M) leader said this was also the first time that a resolution on an economic issue affecting the common people would be adopted in the House.

Earlier, Parliament has adopted resolutions on the US attack on Iraq and Gujarat genocide, "but never on an economic issue", he said.
