Against the backdrop of debate over the quality of bullet-proof jackets used during 26/11 attacks, the Centre is examining various varieties of such gears for security forces according to their requirements.

The new bullet-proof jackets are being tested by the Bureau of Police Research and Development, a nodal agency under the MHA meant to carry out research and development related work for the use of police personnel.

Sources said the new range of swanky and secure bullet proof jackets are being analysed on the basis of needs, roles and type of operations carried out by different security forces.

The combat gear will be acquired by domestic and foreign producers. Sources said for the left-wing extremism affected areas, a new concept of 360 degree (means to provide protection from four sides) bullet-proof jackets, which are light weight and capable of countering ammunition heavier than AK 47, are being checked for the security personnel.

The 360 degree BP jackets provide easy mobility and are ideal for Naxal operations in forests, 26/11 like hostage-crises and in fighting against terrorists. These jackets are capable of providing protection against bullet fired from pistol, revolver, carbine and high velocity SLR and against fragments caused due to explosion of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).
