The function organised by Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), in which they announced the opening of its Gujarat chapter in association with Gujarat University (GU) on January 11, came to an end on Friday.

Founder and chairperson of GOPIO Dr Thomas Abraham said, "The number of students under the Gujarat University's Study Abroad Programme (SAP) which is 238, will increase to 1,000 in the coming year."

He added, "This is the first time that GOPIO had organised a two-day conference with an academic institution. Initially we concentrated only on investments, business and the like. But we realised that it was vital to connect with the younger generations in order to keep the circle of knowledge going."

Dr Abraham believes that in this manner, they are helping build a stronger India. GOPIO has also suggested to the Union government to utilise the full services of the Indian diaspora towards this end.
